As we advance the work of the Challenge, we continue to leverage the latest science – led by Conservation International or partners – to develop tools and resources that will help guide decision making and prioritize investments in coffee sustainability on the ground. Find an overview of the latest tools and resources below that can help your organization better define and prioritize the where, what and why as you navigate landscape efforts in coffee.
The Coffee Resilience Atlas was developed by Conservation International to help practitioners across the industry better understand the overlay between coffee and nature priorities. The atlas features global conservation layers on biodiversity, irrecoverable carbon and nature dependent people that are clipped to suitable areas for arabica and robusta. Additionally, new global layers were created to visualize coffee relevant information, by incorporating data on coffee production and area under cultivation.
How can this tool be used?
The resilience atlas is accessible for users to navigate on their own, and can be used by corporate sustainability and sourcing teams, civil society and researchers to:
In light of climate change and potential shifts in production, understanding opportunities for improved land management in coffee landscapes is key. However, conservation prioritization data and maps are complex and often difficult for local stakeholders to use. Through funding from the Walmart Foundation, together with the Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) and Rainforest Alliance, Conservation International developed a tool in Google Earth Engine that allows non-technical users to generate customized prioritization scenarios for coffee areas in the two pilot countries, Colombia and Indonesia.
How can the tool be used?
This tool can be utilized by different types of users for the purpose of stakeholder engagement, program planning or adaptive management of projects. Specifically, the tool:
